Lenovo Legion Y540 – Still Worth Buying or Just Another Old Gamer’s Rig?

    By James COctober 1, 2025

So, I remember the first time I saw the Lenovo Legion Y540 in some random YouTube video back in 2019. The guy reviewing it was eating chips while gaming (kinda gross honestly) but the way he hyped up the laptop made me feel like this thing was a spaceship in disguise. Fast forward to now, 2025, and the question is still floating around Reddit threads and Discord groups: is this laptop still worth it, or just nostalgia bait for broke gamers like me?

    Design that fooled everyone

Okay, here’s the thing. Unlike other gaming laptops that scream “RGB disco party,” this one came with a surprisingly simple, office-type look. Like, you could literally bring it to a college lecture and nobody would think you’re hiding a GTX graphics card in there. Personally, I kinda liked that vibe. It was like when Clark Kent wears glasses and suddenly people forget he’s Superman. Same with the Y540—minimal outside, beast inside.

I remember a friend in college used to pull it out in library, run PUBG at max graphics, and still pretend like he’s writing an assignment. Pretty sure half the class thought he was just “really focused” when he was actually looting crates in Pochinki.

    Performance was the big flex

Here’s the meat. Back in the day, Legion Y540 had the 9th gen Intel processors and NVIDIA GTX/RTX combo, which honestly handled most AAA titles pretty smoothly. For example, Witcher 3 ran buttery on high settings, and if you toned down a little bit, you could still manage Cyberpunk (though let’s be real, even NASA computers cried with that game when it first launched).

But now, people will argue, “Bro, it’s old gen, stop living in 2019.” Fair point. Yet, if you check the Steam charts, most popular games right now—Valorant, GTA V (yes, still alive), Apex Legends—don’t really need a monster machine. The Y540 can handle those fine.

And let’s not ignore this: in India, not everyone has 2 lakh to throw on an Alienware or the latest ROG Strix. This machine still makes sense for budget-conscious gamers who just want decent fps without selling a kidney.

Cooling system actually worked (miracle in gaming world)

I’ve seen laptops that heat up faster than my chai. But Legion had a surprisingly decent cooling system. Dual fans, larger vents—basically Lenovo said “we don’t want our users frying eggs on the keyboard.” And it worked. My cousin had one and played GTA V for hours. The fans made that airplane-takeoff sound but hey, the laptop didn’t melt.

Also, side note—if you’ve ever tried gaming on some budget Acer laptops, you’ll know why cooling matters. Those things sound like they’re crying for help after 20 minutes of gameplay.

Display and sound – not perfect but not trash

144Hz refresh rate on some versions. At the time, that was a flex. Even now, if you’re upgrading from a basic 60Hz laptop, you’ll feel like you’ve suddenly entered the Matrix. But yeah, the bezels were a bit chunky and the webcam placement at the bottom was… questionable. Like, who thought “let’s give everyone a perfect double-chin shot during Zoom calls”?

Sound quality was fine. Not the loudest, but if you plug in decent headphones (and let’s be real, gamers always use headphones anyway), it doesn’t matter much.

Battery life aka “gaming laptops are all the same here”

Here’s the thing. No matter what brand, gaming laptops and battery life are like Tom and Jerry—they just can’t get along. Y540 was no exception. You’d get 3–4 hours if you’re browsing, maybe watching Netflix. But heavy gaming? Forget it. You’ll need the charger plugged in at all times. And that chunky power brick is basically a weapon by itself.

Price factor and why people still buy it

This is where it gets interesting. On forums, some people laugh and say “why buy old hardware?” But then you see the actual price drop in resale markets and suddenly it makes sense. You’re getting a gaming machine under 60–70k, while newer RTX laptops cost almost double. And if your main games are esports titles, then honestly it’s more than enough.

I saw a post on Quora where someone literally compared buying the Y540 second-hand to getting an iPhone 12 in 2025. Not the latest, not the flashiest, but reliable and affordable. And honestly, that’s a fair analogy.

Social media chatter and meme culture

Reddit is hilarious when it comes to Y540. Some people call it “the Toyota Corolla of gaming laptops”—not flashy, but it keeps running. Others roast it for being outdated, saying things like “bro that thing belongs in a museum next to floppy disks.” On YouTube, though, I still find comments like “I bought this in 2020, still works fine in 2025, zero regrets.”

And if you scroll Twitter (or X, whatever Musk calls it this week), you’ll see gamers complaining about insane prices of new laptops. That’s where Y540 gets mentioned as the underdog choice. Basically, it’s the “Jugaad” option in today’s gaming market.

Final thoughts (not a conclusion, just me rambling)

Would I personally buy it now? Depends. If I had cash, probably not—I’d go for something with RTX 40 series. But if I was on a budget and mainly playing Valorant, CS2, or Fortnite, then yes, I’d totally grab it.

It’s like buying a used but well-maintained Royal Enfield. Not the latest tech, not the smoothest ride, but still turns heads and gets the job done. And sometimes, that’s all you really need.
